The Cavallerizza complex, established in the mid-17th century as the command zone for Savoy government and military operations, is an integral part of an architectural and urban system of extraordinary value, long awaiting redevelopment and full revitalization.
The commitment to strengthening Cavallerizza’s public vocation and reconnecting it with the city has materialized in a comprehensive urban regeneration project involving key stakeholders such as the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the City of Turin, and the University of Turin. The shared objective is to create a hub for cultural innovation within the complex, fostering regeneration and promoting new forms of social engagement with this UNESCO-listed historic and architectural heritage.
Within the complex—where the University of Turin’s Aula Magna is already housed in the Maneggio Chiablese—various actors and functions will be accommodated. The new headquarters of the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo will be located in the Ala del Mosca, while the nearby Pagliere will host a cultural hub. The City of Turin has planned a multifunctional cultural space in the Maneggio Alfieriano, while the adjacent Corpo delle Guardie will house a Research Node of the University of Turin, focusing on culture, creativity, and the arts.
The Cavallerizza system will also include the Polo delle Arti, a new center for specialization and advanced training involving the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin, and the Fondazione Collegio Einaudi. This center will be located in the buildings along Via Verdi and facing the Teatro Regio, opposite a new international-level hospitality structure planned by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti in the former Military Academy buildings.
The functions within the complex will be complemented by a network of covered and open public spaces designed to enhance public accessibility, connecting the site with the surrounding urban fabric and the Royal Gardens.
