The area between Corso Regina Margherita and Corso Belgio is currently occupied by gasometers and some industrial sheds. There are also some “eclectic” buildings with a documentary-environmental value (small blocks of flats and buildings along Corso Regina Margherita). An overall functional reorganization of the current activities has been planned through restoration of parts of the existing buildings, their demolition and subsequent replacement with new constructions and functions.
The project includes the creation of a Hub for research and innovation, with over 9,000 square meters of new green spaces and pedestrian and cycling paths.
The center will focus on studies and research on methane, biomethane, and green hydrogen, actively contributing to the decarbonization process and the transition towards a more sustainable future. 2009 was the last year of operation for the landfill located in the Basse di Stura area. On January 1, 2010, the site’s post-closure management phase began, aiming for the complete environmental recovery of the area through the final restoration of the vegetative cover.
The environmental restoration also includes reducing the visual impact by creating tree barriers along the landfill perimeter and securing the old landfill, which has already been converted into a green area (Parco della Marmorina). This former landfill, which remained in operation from the post-war period until the 1980s, was only partially sealed.
During the post-operational management phase of the landfill, which will last approximately 30 years, maintenance activities will be carried out to ensure compliance with environmental safety requirements.
