Scalo Vallino terminal, built at the end of the 19th century as a service centre for the nearby Porta Railway station, has been used throughout the years as freight terminal, repair shop, train spare part warehouse, and more recently, as a deposit for those companies renting the premises from FS.  The transformation of the area envisages the introduction of mixed-use functions across two intervention lots.

The first lot, located to the south-east, was partially completed in 2023 and included the establishment of the Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre, commissioned by the University of Turin and the CIRP Foundation, covering approximately 10,000 sqm. The intervention to the south of Via Testa is still pending completion and provides for the development of outdoor sports facilities.

The second lot, located at the corner between Corso Someiller and Via Nizza and covering approximately 32,000 sqm, is subject to a Detailed Implementation Plan (Piano Esecutivo Convenzionato) approved in 2022, which envisages the construction of two buildings (up to 9 storeys) dedicated to student housing, integrated with commercial and service functions. These developments will be connected by approximately 7,500 sqm of public spaces.

description

The project envisages the creation of a dynamic and permeable space, a mix of public and private services. The buildings in the project will be erected with different volumes and will have different uses: - near the railway, volumes used for commercial/services purposes on different levels, with 2/3 floors above ground and underground/integrated parking lots; - near Via Nizza, buildings with a max height of 9 storeys used for residential purposes, temporary residential and/or hospitality purposes and service/commercial businesses on the ground floor; - along Corso Sommeiller, a horizontal volume used for residential purposes, temporary residential and/or hospitality purposes. In the northern part, a public square on different levels of variable heights to ensure the connection between Corso Sommeiller overpass and Via Nizza, while in the southern part a sport hub will be created.
