1940

Dopoguerra

After April 25th, Torino is sorely tried by the war. The bombing, started between 11th and 12th June 1940 and culminated between winter 1942 and summer 1943, destroyed not only the productive suburbs, but also the more central areas.

There are:

689,900 inhabitants

6,820 bombs (582 unexploded)

Destroyed or damaged buildings:

9,871 out of 23,280

335 collective buildings

29 churches

8,814 offices and firms

10,420 shops

1,108 factories

7,523 service buildings

(Statistical Yearbook Città di Torino, 1946)

The restart of production is slow. Normality is restored only at the end of the ‘40s, when the pre-war indexes are reached. Indeed, between 1949 and 1950, the first signals of a recovery are visible, followed by an unstoppable growth of the economy driven by the automotive industry.
