La 600 a Mirafiori

Launch of Fiat 600, whose production will reach 2,695,000 units up to 1970. With this model, and that of 500, Fiat can finally use the production linear layout of Mirafiori plant, with over 10 years of delay. Fiat Mirafiori plant, designed by Servizio Costruzioni Fiat led by engineer Vittorio Bonadè Bottino, replicates the US experience of Ford factories, with a one-storey manufacturing complex (unlike multi-level Lingotto factory), with 3 million cubic metres of built volumes on 100 hectares for 22,000 workers. The plant is opened by Benito Mussolini in 1939 when the construction is still in progress and is bombed several times during the war. At the end of the ‘50s, the spaces are no longer sufficient and so the Mirafiori Sud plants are created.
