Piazza Statuto

Between 7th and 9th July violent clashes between Fiat workers and the police take place in piazza Statuto, where the Uil trade union headquarters is based. At the beginning of the month, the trade unions Fiom, Fim and Uil call a 3-day strike which will start on 7th July. Two days before, Uil signs a separate agreement with Fiat and withdraws from the strike. In the morning of 7th strike and picketing take place in Torino’s main industrial plants: Fiat, Riv, Lancia and other smaller companies. The tension gives way to the violent clashes in piazza Statuto which will end after three days with 1,215 people stopped by the police, 90 arrested and indicted, a hundred notified for being on the loose, hundreds of protesters and police officers injured. In early August Fiat dismisses 88 workers involved in the protest. The facts occurred in piazza Statuto are the first clear sign of a long season of strong opposition between companies, politicians and trade unions.
