Lingotto

Fiat announces the closure of Lingotto factory. A competition for the building redevelopment is promoted by a joint venture including Fiat. Different internationally renowned architects participate and it is the occasion for a wider debate on the future of dismissed industrial buildings and their relation with the city. In 1983 the task is assigned to Renzo Piano’s architectural firm that will design a multifunctional complex of 246,000 sqm. The case of Lingotto is emblematic as, from now and in slightly more than a decade, around 10 million sqm of industrial areas are progressively dismissed within the municipal borders.
