Metropolitan Railway System is the project for the reorganization and strengthening of the local railway infrastructures and services in Torino area. At present, SFM consists of 8 lines, 93 stations, 365 daily connections, 1 train every 8 minutes in the rush hour on Torino rail link. The SFM project aims at facilitating medium-short range mobility and promoting interchange among the different lines and with other transport systems, thus improving the connection from/to Torino, with the airport, among the different municipalities in the metropolitan area, as well as rapid movement in the different zones of the city. The SFM project development envisages a first phase (Basic scenario) for the activation of the new sfm8 Settimo-Torino Lingotto line and an increased train frequency on the rail link. The whole service will be performed with new generation trains and the possibility to transport bikes (for free, save in the rush hour) and the integration with urban services will be extended. With the second phase (evolutionary scenario), that will be implemented after the completion of corso Grosseto tunnel, new services will be added: lines sfm3, sfm4, sfm6 and sfm7 to Torino Caselle Airport will be changed and extended, with 8 trains per hour and a 15-minute frequency for each direction, the new sfm5 Orbassano-Torino line will be created and the sfm8 line extended up to Chivasso. The frequency on the rail link will be one train every 5 minutes. The stations of Dora, Zappata, San Paolo will be opened and interchange hubs will be created with the local public transport network.
